Honeysuckle Rose

“Honeysuckle Rose” was written in 1929 by Fats Waller (music) and Andy Razaf (lyrics) for the Broadway revue Load of Coal. Emerging during the Harlem Renaissance, it quickly became one of Waller’s signature tunes, blending playful romance with a buoyant stride rhythm. Its catchy 32-bar AABA form helped it cross from stage to jazz standard.

Waller’s own recordings set the template, but versions by Count Basie and Django Reinhardt expanded its reach. The tune’s chord changes became a favorite for jam sessions, inspiring bebop contrafacts and countless improvisations, all while retaining its easygoing charm.
