Agua de Beber
“Agua de Beber” (“Water to Drink”) was written in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim (music) and Vinícius de Moraes (lyrics) for the stage play Pobre Menina Rica. Emerging during the early bossa nova era in Rio de Janeiro, it quickly became a standard, with notable recordings by Astrud Gilberto and Frank Sinatra.
Early recordings featured the understated nylon-string guitar style associated with João Gilberto—soft, syncopated chords against a restrained vocal line—helping define bossa nova’s intimate sound. Its gently philosophical lyric, likening love to essential water, carried quiet depth beneath the relaxed groove, contributing to the song’s lasting international appeal.
