House of the Rising Sun

“The House of the Rising Sun” is a very old American folk song with roots going back over 100 years. No one knows exactly who wrote it. People sang it in the South, warning about a bad place in New Orleans that could ruin your life. Early singers like Clarence “Tom” Ashley recorded it in 1933, and later Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie kept it alive.

In 1964, The Animals turned it into a big rock hit with Eric Burdon’s strong voice and a famous organ sound. Their version was recorded in just one take and reached number one in many countries.
