Three Blind Mice

“Three Blind Mice” is an English nursery rhyme and musical round, with its earliest known version published in 1609 by Thomas Ravenscroft in Deuteromelia. The original lyrics were quite different, referring to three blind mice and a dame scraping tripe. The modern version, featuring the farmer’s wife cutting off their tails with a carving knife, first appeared in print around the mid-19th century.

A popular theory links it to Queen Mary I (“Bloody Mary”), where the “three blind mice” allegedly represent three Protestant bishops (the Oxford Martyrs) executed by burning in the 1550s. However, scholars note inconsistencies, as they were not blinded and the rhyme’s publication postdates her reign. It endures as a classic, often violent, children’s song worldwide.
